Board Games
One thing that has brought my family together closer is the competition found in a good old board game. What makes board games so intense? Is it the set up? The picking of one's character? The strategy that plays out in a number of the games? What about the winning? Does the competition play out in the enjoyment of this activity? From my own personal experience, playing board games forces those I'm competing with to socialize with each other. We sit down without our phones, laptops, or work related things to have fun as a family or group of friends. I believe in this day and age many people are lost in the connection of electronics and missing the quality of life that comes from the company of personal relationships. Trust me, if you don't pay attention while playing a game, you will either miss something important another player did or miss your turn.Which one?
There are so many board games to choose from, but here are some of my favorites:- Settlers of Catan. A slow moving game but every roll of the dice can effect you. The winner is the player who achieves ten victory points either through the building of settlements, cities, roads, or taking development cards. Anyone can get in everyone's way, and it can become a heated match when someone builds a road where another player was aiming on going. Collect resources based on where settlements are placed. We play this one a lot in my house.
- Another popular game in my home is Ticket to Ride. A game that focuses on getting across the continent, finishing tracks, and building the longest consecutive railroad. The player who earns the most points wins. Points are determined by the length segments of rails, longest railroad, and completion of tracks. Other players can also potentially block your path in this game causing much frustration. I hardly win this game.
- Sequence is a game of cards and pieces, and is won when two sequences are made. Each player takes a turn putting a card down and a piece with their color on the specified card spot. There are two decks of cards and two spots for each card. A sequence is five pieces in a row either horizontally, vertically, or diagonal. You can play with 2-4 players with a four player game requiring two teams. Unique fact: My grandfather made the board we have at my house long ago when my mother was young.
- For a more challenging game with quite a different goal, a player could try Shadows over Camelot. A game where all the players are against the board. Act fast or the board might win. I have only played this game once, we sadly do not own this one, but I enjoyed learning it with my friends as we worked together trying to win.
Games are just a small part of what I enjoy in life. I want to encounter life the right way and find the most enjoyment out of it. We never know how long we have, but we do know we have the moments we have right now.
Settlers of Catan |
I have played the board game Settlers of Catan and thought it was kind of difficult because some players were nearly unable to do much because they didn't have wheat for example they would pretty much lose the game. I found it difficult because I never played it before so it was a new experience for me.
ReplyDeleteIt definitely takes quite a bit of strategy. Sometimes the best thing to do when you can't get one resource is to try and trade with another player. Sometimes you have what that other player really wants.
DeleteRecently, I have been really getting into board games, especially the more complex ones. They are great to get together with friends, and some can be very exercising for the brain which I love. I have played all the games you mentioned which are all great. I actually just recently played Shadows Over Camelot and it instantly became one of my favorites, though how intimidating it may seem at first.
ReplyDeleteI agree completely about how playing board games are a great way to gather with friends. I also agree about how board games can become very competitive, and board games can be a great way to exercise the brain.
ReplyDeleteI always love to play board games with my friends and family, especially the classics like monopoly and clue. Its too bad that its so hard to get a bunch of people in one place to play these games.
